Investigators at Wake Forest University are studying the relationship
between genes, the clinical symptoms of asthma and inflammation in the
airways.  We believe that differences in the genetic background of
patients leads to changes in airway inflammation, response to allergens,
the severity of asthma and the progression of asthma over years.  In
addition, we believe that changes in genes may affect the response to
medications; some patients have better responses to medications while
others have more side effects from the same drugs.  It is our hope that
an increased understanding of the genetics of asthma will improve how we
treat patients with asthma and lead to identification of new medications
for severe asthma.
